Travels with Krissie’s Sinus Infection

that’s Krissie with a sinus infection. Now every time I blow my nose (not often) it’s bloody. Glands are swollen, ears are screwed coz of the airplane pressure. Felt horrid yesterday, better today. Don’t know what to do — the cough is worse and my throat hurts. All the warnings are justified — I’ve seen how antibiotics can screw people up. But Richie gets chronic sinus infections and they fix them. (Shrug).

But I digress. I’M HOME!!!!!!!! Of course, anywhere Jenny and Lani are is home, anywhere just one of them is is home. I still have to deal with the cruddiness that’s bothering me (or maybe I don’t for a few more days, till the meds take effect) but I’m here, and I can breathe a sigh of relief.
The place looks fabulous. Well, it looks like a bomb hit it, but that’s because so much stuff is cleared out and gone. it’s wonderful. They’ve both been working so hard. Today we’re going to go through Jenny’s clothes, ruthlessly, I’ll take what I want (because I’m getting skinnier — I’m moving into a XL and Jenny’s moved out of it). The main thing I need to do is get rid of clothes when I get home, which is easy. It’ll be fun to replace old stuff with new, even if the old stuff is perfectly good.
There’s also a huge goodwill pile that I’m hoping we’ll sort through. I’d love to take it to Goodwill and then poke around there. They have an excellent Goodwill.
For food we’re gonna have to be adaptable. I’ll eat well as often as I can, but f’rinstance I’ve had a craving for pancakes and in my pitiful condition I deserve pancakes, so we’re going to ihop this morning. And I need to buy a gallon of water because Cincinnati water is so god-awful you can’t even make tea with it, and I need my tea with honey.

Anyway, now I’m torn as to whether to call my doctor back. It’s been 9 days now, and just gets worse (though the first two days were awful — I just slept). This is distracting me from my depression — how dare it! Nah, I can’t be too depressed here at Squalor on the River.
So happy to be here, but missing Richie, who’s been nothing but wonderful. Hey, and so has my son since he’s been back. We’ve had long talks, he vacuumed the house yesterday, he tells Erin he loves her, he’s good with Alex.
And my daughter is taking care of business, god bless her, and I’ll see her soon. It’s gonna be okay.
And it’ll be so great with Jenny close enough that I can jump in the car and visit for a few days any time I want. And when Lani moves she’ll be even closer.

Nothing but good times head.

  1. Except for the the sinus infection, it all sounds fabulous! Now you just need to get rid of that and everything will be most excellent. Best wishes for renewed health soon so you can best enjoy being home with your sisters.

  2. I think you should call the doctor and say it’s getting worse and there’s no point in waiting for it to get even worser (yes I wrote that) so you need antibiotics NOW. And give them the number of a local pharmacy to call. Or go to a clinic where you are and get it taken care of there.

  3. I’m in the call your doctor now camp. And if you have a doctor who doesn’t listen to you, find a new doctor. There’s no excuse for this kind of misery when it can be taken care of. That said, enjoy the squalor! Sounds like excellent times ahead . . .

It’s 2012, not 1812. Drugs appropriately applied are a wonderful thing.

Are you able to or have already tried salt water rinse? It helps a lot, you can just buy a little bottle of pre-mixed saline solution at the store. A singer’s favorite for unhappy sinuses, until the big guns can get called in and do their work.

    Have a loverly visit!

    • I was going to suggest a salt water rinse in addition to a decongestant – which should help with symptoms until you GET SOME ANTIBIOTICS. A sinus infection will eventually clear up on its own but why wait around for a month or more when you can feel better in a matter of days? There are certain antibiotics which are FREE at Meijer – maybe one of them would be appropriate? I’m sure Meijer has a list of which ones on their website or you could call them to see. Then just get your doctor to send your rx there for dispensing.

      Otherwise, have fun 🙂

  5. I vote for calling the doctor and telling him/her that your symptoms and condition are much worse.

I say that even though I remember my father, a doctor, telling me when I was young that you can take stuff for a cold and be over it in seven days or not take anything and be over it in seven days. His point was that there wasn’t a cure. However, there are things to take that might relieve the impact of the symptoms.

Is there anything other than antibiotics that will alleviate symptoms so that you feel a little better while the infection works its way through you and out? If there is something, do that!

I laughed when I read what your father said,Mary Stella… My dear departed first husband worked in the pharmaceutical industry said basically the same thing (except one you were over it in a week and the other in 7 days…). These were the guys to know!

Anything with decongestants are the worst for that. Theres always a bounce back when they wear off, so you take some more to feel better, and then some more. Until you feel worse than when you started, are addicted to decongestants and think your cold is full-blown flu!

If you can’t get antibiotics, try Mucinex. Take the maximum dose – it will loosen things up so your sinuses can drain. Make sure you drink lots and lots and take it for several days or a week. I used to get a sinus infection after every cold until I started taking Mucinex. Haven’t had one since.

  7. Cindy says:

What everyone else said. Call the doctor. Also use the saline sinus rinse. They’ll help with the bloody nose. Carolc recommended Mucinex, and I agree. It works wonders. I’m so glad your home. Get better.

Another recommendation is steamn inhalation, 3-4 times a day trying to clear out the sinuses (especially if the sensation of the sinus washouts is yucky!). But phone the doc since it’s not getting any better. Good luck 🙂

  9. Great to see your smiling face. Happiness with the sisters and yeah, being so close has to be fantastic for you all.

Sinusitis is the pits. The times I’ve had it I’m so dizzy I fall over. I walk from the bedroom to anywhere holding onto walls and furniture … it’s horrible. Take the whole course of antibiotics and it will be gone soon. 🙂

WOW! It sounds like the pysch meds are really working (-:. I bet it’s a triple punch of everything that’s making you so happy, and it makes me happy just to hear it (-:.

BTW, assvice, but if the water is so bad, you should be getting two or three gallons. You won’t drink tap water if it’s nasty. Whenever I have to stay in Omaha, we stop at a grocery store and pick up whatever bottled water they have on sale. It just makes sense. Eight cups a day is two liters or half a gallon. Women of size like me can handle 12 cups no problem. Use it if you do the nose-saline thing, too.

Hope your sinus infection is a memory by tomorrow!

  11. I’m still gonna push for decongestant and sinus rinse. Attack that ailment with everything you got. Also, get sleep. My sinuses are worse when I don’t sleep enough.

Laugh – that shouldn’t be too hard at “home” – the intake of air and lung and muscles exercised plus good brain drugs will combine to get you better faster.

    • romney says:

Decongestant is nice in the short-term, but it will come back to bite you – you always feel worse after it wears off, so save it for when you really need it like when you’re going to sleep or do physical activity. Or feel really bad!
